NYC Pride Internship
BCNY members Caleb and Alex kicked off the inaugural BCNY internship with the iconic NYC Pride and Heritage of Pride. Developing communications and programming skills with wonderful mentors like NYC Pride’s Co-Chair, Kazz Alexander, and Associate Director of Operations, Joshua Woods, Caleb & Alex learned first-hand what it means to accomplish this year’s theme: “Reflect. Empower. Unite.”
They shared: “This pride internship has opened my eyes to a whole new realm of opportunity and culture. While the NYC Pride March, Pride Fest, and Youth Pride are still a month from now, I look forward to seeing our work come to life and marching in the parade.”
Youth Pride & The March
In collaboration with NYC Pride and Heritage of Pride, BCNY members and Pride interns Caleb and Alex attended Youth Pride. Situated in Seaport, Manhattan, and featuring music, carnival games, glam and wellness tents, and educational resources, Youth Pride established a safe space for queer youth. This space for youth is significant in today’s political climate when youth autonomy is consistently being threatened on local, state, and federal levels.
A special treat for their hard work, Caleb and Alex found themselves on one of the floats for The March, an annual civil rights demonstration that raises awareness about the fight against AIDS and honors those we have lost to illness, violence, and neglect. Caleb was later awarded by NYC Pride for his work, reflecting, “On Pride Day I was honored to be the Lead for Heritage of Pride’s Youth Float, working with March leadership, queer youth leaders and entertainers, as well as students and staff at Trans formative Schools. To mark the special day and my commitment this Pride season, I received the March Newcomers Award.”
We are proud of Caleb and Alex for working so hard to help make the visions of NYC Pride a success this year and fostering an environment where all boys and young men feel safe. Big thanks to NYC Heritage of Pride for hosting this exciting Career Training opportunity in partnership with BCNY.
