Gerry Arts Showcase 2024

May 17th, 2024

BCNY’s Gerry Theater presented its impressive Arts Showcase: The Journey 2024. Our young muralists worked with art instructor Rasheeda to develop four main themes: superheroes, the world, Basquiat, and a VR Junior jungle. The Explorers and Teens music ensembles showed out, performing crowd favorites like Billie Jean.

From concept creation to painting, we caught a glimpse of the BCNY muralists’ process. The Explorers developed their mural around the theme of superheroes. Rather than using known heroes like Superman or Spiderman, the explorers were challenged to create their own. As we saw, they delivered. The 4C’s superheroes can be seen fighting struggles and realities that can get in the way of building a strong BCNY community: bullying, insecurities, fear, and profanity. The Juniors centered around an original idea: a virtual reality (VR) Junior jungle. Still in the works, the mural features a child with a VR headset looking out into the foliage of a jungle. The Teens focused on four important principles: unity, justice, peace, and equality, creating a mural with hands and arms linked.

The music performance was electrifying, boasting amazing lightwork and quality music from both ensembles. The Explorers music ensemble played: Cockles and Mussels, Twinkle Twinkle Little Star, When the Saints Go Marching In, and Mr. Bartow’s Blues. The Teens music ensemble closed the showcase with Freaking Out the Neighborhood, Everybody Wants to Rule the World, Billie Jean, Numb, and Notion. The audience could not contain itself, jumping, clapping, and cheering. This was Teens ensemble member Carter C.’s last performance as he will be moving on to boarding school in the coming semester, so we felt especially proud to see the culmination of his musical efforts.
