Alumnus Spotlight: Rodney O. Miller, author of children’s book “Stringbean: Tall Tale Chronicles”

March 12th, 2024

Members sat down with BCNY alumnus and children’s book author, Rodney O. Miller for a reading of his inspiring children’s book, “Stringbean: Tall Tale Chronicles.”

Excerpt from the book:

“The fourth grade is finally over, and Ronald must find a way to stop the bullying and teasing at school before he starts the fifth grade. He embarks on a journey that teaches him that he should be careful with what he asks for. Will Ronald erase his string bean image? Will he finally fit in at school? Was he doomed to always be the weird, goofy, tall kid?”

Drawing on his own experiences for the book, Rodney invited members and staff into his journey as a boy who often felt like an outsider: “My character, Ronald, goes on a journey of self-discovery and finds that people may not always be kind. But learning how to love yourself no matter what others think is key. It can be a superpower.”

After reading “Stringbean” aloud, Rodney and the boys discussed Ronald’s story further. Exploring important topics children face daily, such as bullying, peer pressure, and self-esteem, they arrived at an important conclusion: facing insecurities head-on helps you find your voice and confidence. Staying true to your individuality with support from family and friends is vital.

Each member received a signed copy of the book and an opportunity to connect with Rodney, who continues to inspire young people to love their differences and follow their dreams.
